Netflix vs. Hulu: Original Content

Netflix and Hulu have been at war for more than a decade now. A large number of original content has been produced as a result of this war. This war has benefited us, the viewers. Having access to hundreds of newly created original content every year. But which company has had the most impact on our streaming experience?

Netflix Original Content

While movies were once the main reason to watch Netflix, these days it’s known for its original TV programming. And with their binge-watch friendly release program, more viewers have been attracted to watch their original shows.

Currently, Netflix is still far in the lead in producing the most shows. It has more than 250 TV shows in its Netflix Originals pipeline for the coming years. A report shows that Netflix has spent $8 billion on content in 2018. This means that Netflix will have a great deal of original content in its arsenal in the coming years.

Some of Netflix’s best shows include House of Cards, Black Mirror, Stranger Things, Marvel’s Daredevil, Queer Eye and Orange Is the New Black.

Hulu Original Content

Hulu‘s library of original series may not match the likes of Netflix, but the streaming platform has been making a name for itself with a recent flurry of great Hulu Originals. Hulu got a late start to original content, relying instead on its deep catalog of network shows. But it has made up some ground with its new shows.

Reports indicate that Hulu had plans to spend $3 billion in 2018 on original programming alone. This is far less than what Netflix had spent in 2018. But in CES 2018, Hulu CEO, Randy Freer, announced that Hulu has access to 20 to $30 billion worth of content. But these contents are not original content. These contents are provided by the television companies that Hulu works with.

Some of Hulu’s best original shows are The Handmaid’s Tale, Castle Rock, The Path, Into the Dark and 11.22.63.

Netflix clearly has the upper hand with a higher quantity of shows and even higher quality. But Hulu has shown the world what it can do and there is certainly more where that came from.
